During Cultura Nova 2026 in Hulsberg, a special opera production will be on display. Opera Compact, in collaboration with PLT Theaters, Cultura Nova, and the municipality of Beekdaelen, will present Georges Bizet’s world-famous opera Carmen. The performance will take place at a unique venue: the Equine Park in Hulsberg.
The audience will be seated on bleachers in the sand, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an arena in Seville. With an impressive orchestra, a professional cast, and the involvement of volunteers from Beekdaelen, this classic will come to life in a remarkable way.
The story of Carmen is well-known to many: a tale of love, desire, and jealousy. In this new production directed by Eva Custers, a promising new talent, the perspective shifts. The opera illustrates how, in the clash between power and freedom, innocent victims fall.
The role of Carmen will be played by Lucie van Ree, opposite Deniz Yilmaz as Don José. What begins as desire turns when that desire becomes possession. Not romantic passion, but the inability to accept the freedom of the other, takes center stage.
For Eva Custers, Carmen marks her opera debut. She deliberately chose an approach that resonates with contemporary times. According to artistic director Sybrand van der Werf of Opera Compact, it was clear from the start that this production had to be directed by a woman: “The twilight zone between seduction and power is experienced very differently by men and women.” Bizet’s music will be performed by a live ensemble of twelve musicians, conducted by Enrico Delamboye.
