More peace and space for nature restoration in the Mastbos: Bouvignedreef permanently car-free
Staatsbosbeheer and the municipality of Breda have adjusted parking options in the northern part of the Mastbos. Visitors often parked in the verges, causing damage to tree roots. For three years, it has no longer been possible to park in the verges along the Huisdreef. The Bouvignedreef has also been closed off for some time, but is now permanently car-free. Gates will be installed at various locations. This will give nature the opportunity to recover and provide cyclists and walkers with more space and peace.
Peace, space and safety
Staatsbosbeheer and the Municipality of Breda have been considering a better balance between natural value, accessibility, recreation and safety in the Mastbos for years. Alderman Peter Bakker (Nature Development): “We want to preserve the historic avenues of the Mastbos. With these measures, nature will have the chance to recover. This provides space and peace, both for nature and for visitors to the Mastbos. In this way, we are all contributing to the ambition ‘Breda City in a Park’. A number of measures were already in place, but now they are all final.”

Over the years, the number of visitors to this part of the Mastbos has increased. This also means an increase in car traffic, emissions and noise. On busy days, many cars drove in both directions along the Huisdreef, and the verges on both sides were full of parked cars. This also had consequences for the safety of walkers and cyclists. Moreover, the experience of the forest for walkers and cyclists is much better without car traffic.
Freek Rebel, Head of Staatsbosbeheer North Brabant: “After years of work, the Bouvignedreef is now closed to motorized traffic. This has brought more peace to the forest. That is better for nature and the visitor also benefits.”
Changes
The Huisdreef is car-restricted from Burgemeester Kerstenlaan to the Bouvignedreef. Visitors can no longer park in the verges along the Huisdreef. The Huisdreef and Stouwdreef remain accessible by car. The Stouwdreef has five parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities.
Since November 2023, the Bouvignedreef has been inaccessible to cars. The houses on the Bouvignedreef remain accessible via the Huisdreef. The parking spaces of the Water Board and at restaurant Bouvigne Paradijs offer parking options. These parking spaces have been made accessible from the Mastbos by creating footpaths. The other official parking spaces around the Mastbos, such as at the corner of Burgemeester Kerstenlaan / Huisdreef, also remain available.
