Money Week 23 - 27 March: Money Fairy Tales
From 23 to 27 March, Money Week takes place. Capelle is once again participating with numerous activities. This year’s theme is: ‘Money Fairy Tales – too good to be true’. Read more about the activities.
Money Fairy Tales – Too Good to Be True
Young people today are growing up in a world full of temptations. On social media, money sometimes seems to flow in effortlessly. Influencers showcase a life of luxury. Advertisements claim that a deal is ‘only available today’. And stories about making quick money spread like wildfire.
But not everything that glitters is gold. Many of these stories are actually money fairy tales: beautiful promises that are too good to be true. For young people, it can be difficult to see through them. That’s why it’s so important that we talk about money together. At home around the kitchen table, at school, and in the neighbourhood. About recognising temptations, making wise choices, and the value of money.
The national Money Week helps with this. This year, the theme is ‘Money Fairy Tales – too good to be true’. It invites us all to reflect on the question: do we actually recognise these money fairy tales ourselves? And how can we help young people see through them?
In Capelle, we are also paying attention to this. Together with partners such as Welzijn Capelle, the KinderLabs, youth work, the Wijkwinkels (neighbourhood shops), Samen010/Budgetmaatjes (budget buddies), and the Library, we are organising activities for young and old. In the Wijkwinkels, residents of Capelle can get information and advice on financial matters. In the KinderLabs and at Welzijn Capelle, activities focus on money, such as a shopping quiz that shows how quickly small amounts add up. Various schools in Capelle are also offering lessons on money this week. For young people, there is an event called ‘Money Fairy Tales Unmasked’ on 26 March at CAPSLOC. Speaker Roy will share his personal story about the temptations of making quick money. For all activities, visit www.watisertedoenincapelle.nl under the theme ‘money’.
Together, we help residents of Capelle recognise money fairy tales – and, above all, write their own realistic story.
Kind regards,
René van Hemert
Councillor, Municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel
