Volunteers prune fruit trees in Schollebos Park
On Saturday, February 28, volunteers gave the fruit trees in Schollebos Park their annual pruning. Together, they worked in the park to prepare the trees for the new growing season.
The volunteers were guided by the park supervisor. In the morning, there was also time for a short break with a drink and a slice of cake. It was not only a productive morning but also a pleasant one.
Why pruning is important
During the annual pruning, branches that do not bear fruit or obstruct other branches are removed. By pruning the trees, they receive more light and space, allowing them to use their energy more effectively to produce fruit.
The result is that the fruit trees will bear larger and sweeter fruits later in the year. Not only park visitors benefit from this, but birds and other animals also enjoy the harvest.
Picking fruit yourself
From this summer, visitors to Schollebos Park can once again pick fruit in the designated picking zones. Thanks to the pruning of the fruit trees earlier this year, the trees have more space to grow fruit. From the summer, you can pick berries and cherries in the picking zones. Apples and pears will also be ripe from August. Visitors are welcome to pick and take the fruit home from the park.
