Result of Cycling Municipality Election Known: Dantumadiel 24th out of 342 Municipalities
The Fietsersbond organizes the Cycling Municipality survey every two years. More than 40,000 cyclists in all municipalities of the Netherlands gave their opinion on the cycling climate. Cycling Municipality is thus the largest cycling research in the Netherlands.
Cyclists in Dantumadiel continue to point out the roundabouts in the Haadwei in Damwâld as the most important point of attention, and the prevention of slipperiness was also mentioned several times in the open question of the survey.
Ranking 24th on the list means that Dantumadiel is this edition the highest-ranked Frisian municipality, apart from the Wadden Islands, which are traditionally found high in the overall ranking. Indeed, a beautiful result as it ended in 264th place in the previous edition.
One of the tools to keep municipalities livable is making the right choices when it comes to mobility. The survey results show that cyclists deserve more attention.
Winners Cycling Municipality 2026
Municipality Tubbergen wins the coveted title Cycling Municipality 2026 and is also the winner in the category ‘small municipality’ (under 50,000 inhabitants). Other winners are municipality Zwolle (best large municipality, over 100,000 inhabitants) and municipality Pijnacker-Nootdorp (best medium-sized municipality).
Largest Cycling Research in the Netherlands
Cycling Municipality is the largest cycling research in the Netherlands that the Fietsersbond conducts every two years. At least 50 surveys per municipality are needed to compete for the title. Esther van Garderen, director of the Fietsersbond: “All this with the goal: making cycling as safe and comfortable as possible throughout the Netherlands.” More than 40,000 cyclists in all Dutch municipalities answered questions about, for example, safety, maintenance, bike parking, lighting, signage, and crossings.
Municipal Council Elections
For every municipality, the results are available. Esther van Garderen, director of the Fietsersbond: “For the first time, the results are known before the municipal council elections, so we hope that council members, civil servants, and aldermen really get to work with the outcomes in their own municipality.”
