From bin to raw material: what happens to your waste?
You place your bin at the curb, and shortly after, a collection vehicle empties it. But what happens to your waste after that? For many residents, the story ends here, while the real work is only just beginning.
In our municipality, REMONDIS collects household waste. Behind the collection vehicles you see on the streets lies an entire chain of transport, sorting, and processing. Together with the municipality and partners such as Biemans from Venray, REMONDIS ensures that waste is processed and reused as effectively as possible.
More than just a garbage truck
REMONDIS plans the routes and collection days. They then transport the waste to various processing facilities. But the first step starts at home. If you separate your waste properly, companies can recycle the materials more efficiently. This way, we collectively preserve valuable raw materials that can be reused in production.
What happens to the different waste streams?
After collection, REMONDIS transports the waste streams to the right locations. There, the materials are checked, sorted, and processed. The goal is to reuse as much as possible.
Bulky waste
Bulky waste is first sorted. Materials such as wood, metals, and hard plastics can often be reused. What cannot be recycled is used to generate sustainable energy for homes and businesses.
Large garden waste
Large garden waste is shredded and processed into new applications, such as potting soil, in agriculture and horticulture, or in public spaces. What grows in your garden thus contributes to new growth and sustainable projects.
Organic waste (GFT)
The organic waste (vegetable, fruit, and garden waste) from Gennep is sent to processor Attero. There, it is converted into compost and green energy.
Plastic, metal, and beverage cartons (PMD)
PMD is further sorted by specialized companies into different material types. These materials can then be reused in new products.
Incontinence materials
This type of waste also has a dedicated processing method. The material is separated into plastics and organic components, allowing part of this waste stream to be reused as well.
Working together to reduce residual waste
The municipality of Gennep and REMONDIS work closely together to collect your waste reliably. We make clear agreements about collection frequency, routes, and processing methods. Thanks to these short lines of communication and mutual trust, the collection process runs smoothly.
But an efficient waste chain only works if everyone participates. You separate your waste, the municipality organizes the system, and REMONDIS collects and transports it to processors. Proper separation preserves raw materials, which means less residual waste, less incineration, and less waste.

Together, residents, the municipality, and REMONDIS ensure that waste is not simply discarded but given a new purpose.
