Meeting 'Farming for the Future' on Goeree-Overflakkee: Discussing the Agricultural Sector of Tomorrow
On Friday, 13 March, farmers, local and provincial administrators, young people, and partners gathered for the meeting ‘Farming for the Future: Farming with an Eye on Tomorrow’. In the Beroepscampus in Sommelsdijk, they discussed the future of the agricultural sector on Goeree-Overflakkee. Through video footage and discussions, entrepreneurs shared their experiences, ideas, and concerns about developments in the sector.
The meeting was organised by the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, together with representatives from the agricultural sector. Alderman Henk van Putten opened the programme: “This sector belongs to Goeree-Overflakkee. What really strikes me is how these engaged entrepreneurs are always looking ahead. With new ideas, innovation, and collaboration, they work every day on the agriculture of tomorrow. We are proud of that!”
The completion of the area plan for Goeree-Overflakkee was also an incentive for the meeting. This plan describes the key characteristics of the agricultural sector and the challenges in the area. It shows what is needed to tackle these issues together. For Goeree-Overflakkee, this includes drought and waterlogging, increasing salinisation, improving water quality, and strengthening nature, agriculture, and the landscape.
Education, innovation, and new forms of agriculture
During the afternoon, various important themes were addressed. These were introduced with videos of farmers on Goeree-Overflakkee, in which they shared their experiences and approaches. Participants discussed the latest innovations on the island, water management, and diversified agriculture. Attention was also given to education at the Proeftuin in the Pallandtpolder and how to keep new generations enthusiastic about the profession. Circular agriculture was also discussed. Raw materials are exchanged and optimally utilised, ensuring that agriculture, nature, and the environment remain in better balance and everyone benefits.
Provincial Deputies Aad Straathof and Arne Weverling of the Province of South Holland played an important role during the afternoon. Aad Straathof: “It is good to come together with entrepreneurs from the sector in this way. The examples show how farmers on Goeree-Overflakkee are practically working on themes such as circular agriculture, education, and innovation.” Arne Weverling: “At a meeting like this, you hear directly what is going on. That helps us as a province to align with what is needed. I am proud of the collaboration that the area partners on Goeree-Overflakkee have demonstrated in creating the area plan.”
Water as the Basis for Agriculture
Water was one of the central themes during the meeting. Goeree-Overflakkee faces significant water challenges. Participants discussed this together. Dike Warden Jan Bonjer of Hoogheemraadschap Hollandse Delta shared his vision: “On Goeree-Overflakkee, issues such as drought, waterlogging, and salinisation constantly demand attention. Water and agriculture are closely connected. It is valuable to discuss this together with farmers, administrators, and partners. Only through a joint, integrated approach can we develop towards a climate-resilient island.”
Building the Future Together
The afternoon concluded with the song *Fields of Gold*, performed by singer Clementine Volker. The song provided a fitting symbolic closure to an afternoon in which the landscape and farm work were central. Hanneke de Baar, owner of poultry farm Eibaar and chair of the Land and Horticulture Organisation Goeree-Overflakkee, said: “It was a wonderful meeting. By continuing to meet and work together, we are building a strong agricultural sector for the future. I am proud to be part of that. Alone, we may go faster, but together, we go further.”
