Column | The Next Chapter
Tomorrow is the day: we get to go to the polls again! It’s a special moment. I don’t call it anything less than the festival of democracy. Because with your vote, you help decide the future of Haarlemmermeer. Together, we’re writing the next chapter of our municipality.
Last year, I spoke with Luna, Evine, and Sven, students in their fifth year of pre-university education at the Herbert Vissers College. For their profile project, they created a documentary about the entire history of Haarlemmermeer. They wanted to know how our municipality became what it is today. To find out, they conducted extensive research and interviews, including one with me. It was incredibly enjoyable to discuss the origins of Haarlemmermeer with these young people. I’m impressed by their enthusiasm and dedication to this project.
During their research, they noticed that many young people know very little about the history of Haarlemmermeer. Yet it’s precisely this rich history that has shaped where we stand today. With their curious perspective, Luna, Evine, and Sven captured this story in a compelling way.
And we continue to write that story every day. Especially tomorrow, during the festival of democracy. Because in the voting booth, you help determine the direction of our municipality and how we want to live, work, and coexist in Haarlemmermeer.
That’s why I hope many residents will cast their votes tomorrow. And I especially hope that many young people will vote as well. After all, the future of our municipality is primarily theirs. So get involved and cast your vote. That’s how we’ll shape the next chapter of Haarlemmermeer together.
