Near the Koningsbergerschool in Bergentheim, many students come from the surrounding area. During school hours, the Dorpsstraat sees a constant flow of various types of traffic: cyclists, pedestrians, and cars. This made the situation unclear and unsafe during peak times. Over the past period, the street has been renovated to address this. The road is now a one-way street with a clearly marked pedestrian crossing near the school. On Tuesday, March 17, alderman Alwin te Rietstap officially opened the new school environment.
As a municipality, we find it important that everyone is "Safe on the road," especially in school areas. During school hours, the area is often busy with various types of traffic, leading to unsafe situations. That’s why we engaged in discussions with residents, Plaatselijk Belang, the supermarket, the physiotherapist, and of course the school itself. How can we work together to make the environment safer and clearer, especially during school hours?
One-way street
The result is the renovated Dorpsstraat: a one-way street with a clearly marked pedestrian crossing near the school. From the Stationsweg, you can now only drive toward Bastingplein. From Bastingplein, you can return to Stationsweg via Burgemeester Oprellaan. In addition to this change, we have also narrowed and greened the road.
Parking at Bastingplein
Children from the surrounding area attend school here. Some students are dropped off by car. The kiss & ride has been removed because it led to unclear and unsafe traffic situations. The intention is for cars to park at Bastingplein. From there, students can safely walk along the sidewalk toward the school. Near the school, a pedestrian crossing with a speed bump has been created. On both sides, tiles have been placed to remind students to look carefully before crossing.
Opening: laying a tile together
On Tuesday morning, March 17, the opening took place. All students and teachers of the Koningsbergerschool gathered at the entrance of the square. Alderman Alwin te Rietstap explained how important we find a safe school environment and how we achieved this here. He also thanked all those involved. Afterward, it was time for the official opening: the alderman, together with two students, laid a special Dick Bruna tile to clearly mark the pedestrian crossing.
