South Limburg launches pilot emergency support points for large-scale power outages
Safety Region South Limburg (VRZL) is launching a pilot project with emergency support points in collaboration with the municipalities of Beek, Beekdaelen, Kerkrade, Landgraaf, Maastricht, Simpelveld, Sittard-Geleen, and Stein.
Emergency support points are recognizable locations where residents can go for information or to report emergencies when regular communication channels are unavailable. These are not evacuation centers.
Importance of emergency support points
“If power, internet, and phone services fail simultaneously, it becomes difficult to obtain information or reach help,” says Hans Verheijen, Mayor of Sittard-Geleen and portfolio holder for a Resilient Society at VRZL. “With emergency support points, we ensure physical locations where residents can turn to for information and to make emergency reports. Through this pilot, we are testing how to organize this in practice.”
Setup and collaboration
The pilot will examine suitable locations, the setup of the support points, staffing, coordination, and communication with residents. A regional coordination center will also be tested within the pilot. This center will support the emergency support points, consolidate information, and ensure connectivity with the regional crisis organization.
Gaining experience
The pilot is part of a national approach to gain experience in every safety region with emergency support points. It will investigate what is organizationally, operationally, and financially required for structural implementation. Insights from the pilot will be shared with other municipalities in South Limburg.
Part of a broader approach
The pilot aligns with a broader strategy by VRZL and the municipalities in South Limburg to better prepare society for prolonged disruptions to critical services. Together, we are working toward a resilient region, with attention to the continuity of essential government processes and the self-reliance and mutual assistance of residents.
