New artworks along Wilderszijde cycle path
Lansingerland now features beautiful new artworks at two locations in the Wilderszijde district. The sculptures can be found on either side of the cycle path running through the neighbourhood. On April 19, a ceremonial opening took place with Alderman for Culture Titia Cnossen and artist Herman Lamers.
The artwork consists of two iron (outline) sculptures depicting the silhouettes of classic windmills, each about 6 metres tall. The designs are based on the windmills that once stood along the Rotte River and helped drain the Boterdorpsche Polder, the area where the Wilderszijde district is now being developed. The historical connection of the artwork has been coordinated with the Historical Association Den Berchsen Hoeck.
One mill is located near the cycle bridge on Wildersekade, while the second stands on the opposite side of the cycle path, opposite Boterdorpseweg.
Alderman for Culture Titia Cnossen is pleased with this attractive addition to the public space: “These impressive artworks serve as distinctive landmarks, almost like gateways to the cycle path and the Wilderszijde district. Public art is important. It tells stories, brings places to life and provides inspiration. My thanks go to artist Henk Lamers, Modelstaal BV and everyone involved in making this artwork possible. It fits beautifully in this area.”
