Plan for Rembrandtboulevard definitively halted
In 2014, the former municipality of Veghel made an agreement with construction company Heijmans. They wanted to build houses along Rembrandtlaan in Veghel. However, in 2018, the zoning plan was rejected by the Council of State. After that, they explored new plans. Unfortunately, they were unable to develop a plan that was both suitable and affordable enough. Last week, the municipality and Heijmans therefore decided to completely halt this project. This decision has now been made official.
Clarity for local residents
Councilor Jan van Burgsteden says: “We will no longer build houses in this location. Local residents have been living in uncertainty for a long time. This decision at least gives them clarity. But we also understand that there are still questions. For example: what will happen to this location now? And what will happen to the national highway (the N279) or the maintenance of Rembrandtlaan? We will provide more information about this before the summer.”
Why has it been halted?
Since 2014, many things have changed, such as new regulations and different goals, for example regarding climate. Additionally, certain road adjustments could no longer be carried out. As a result, they were unable to develop a good and feasible plan. There are also still many uncertainties surrounding the plans for the N279. This makes it difficult to proceed with this location.
Nevertheless, Councilor Van Burgsteden sees an opportunity: “Because the project is now being halted, the municipality has complete freedom to think about this location itself. First, we will wait for clarity on the N279. After that, we will look at what this location can mean for Veghel. Together with the neighborhood, we want to consider a new plan.”
