Column Theo Segers: On the road for democracy
On Wednesday, March 18, it will happen again: from 07:30, all ballot boxes in Molenlanden will be open. While most residents are still pouring their first coffee, I am already in the car. Unfortunately, my mission to visit all 28 polling stations does not succeed by bike. In the afternoon, the child mayor joins in, always good for a fresh perspective. In each polling station, I meet volunteers who have often been ensuring for years that everything proceeds correctly. I have a chat, take a look at the process, and often have a spontaneous conversation with residents who are going to vote. I drive about 200 kilometers that day to arrive at the last in line around 21:00, when the polling stations close. Sometimes people ask if such a round is not mainly a mandatory number. It is far from that. In the months before, a tremendous amount of work is done to make this day possible. And then it is finally time: the highlight of our local democracy, the municipal council elections. You have the opportunity to choose who may represent you in the municipal council. Six parties are participating. There is a good chance that one of them fits what you consider important. By coloring one box red, you help determine the direction of our municipality. Of the parties participating in Molenlanden, there is certainly one party where you feel most at home. Make use of your democratic right and go vote. Voter turnout in Molenlanden is high for all elections. Let that be the case again now.
