Peize upgrades sewer system to tackle flooding and future-proof infrastructure
Residents of Peize will see major improvements in water drainage as the municipality upgrades its sewer system. The project aims to prevent flooding, which has increasingly affected homes and gardens, especially after heavy rainfall. Work starts this year and will continue into 2027.

Getting to work with water in Peize
In Peize, work is underway in several locations to improve water drainage. Kortland is one of the areas in Peize where a new sewer system is being installed. In recent years, many places have experienced flooding, especially after prolonged rain or heavy downpours. Several projects are currently underway to reduce water-related issues. This will prepare Peize for the future.
Over the coming years, the centre of Peize will be redesigned. Underground, a separate sewer system will be installed. One pipe will carry wastewater from homes and businesses, while a second pipe will drain (clean) rainwater from streets and roofs. When it rains heavily for a long time, the sewer system will be able to handle much more water. Above ground, roads and public spaces will also be renovated.
The project to redesign Peize’s centre is currently in phase 2. This phase involves Brinkweg, Woordlaan, and the central section of Hoofdstraat. Work is also taking place along Zuurseweg and in the Groene Hart—the green area between Brinkweg, Molenweg, Zuurseweg, and Kerkstraat. Much of the rainwater from the centre will flow towards the Grote Masloot in the western part of the village, which connects to the Peizerdiep.
Residents and entrepreneurs are involved in working groups, contributing ideas for greenery, parking, and road design. Work on Woordlaan and Brinkweg is planned for 2026, while other streets and the Groene Hart will be addressed in 2027. The timeline also depends on utility companies’ schedules. WMD is replacing water pipes, Enexis is reinforcing the electricity grid, and in some places, gas pipes are being renewed. More information about this project is available on the Centrum Peize page.
Kortland sewer system
In the Kortland neighbourhood—located between Hereweg, Kortlandsweg, and Zuurseweg—the sewer system is outdated. A separate sewer system with two pipes will also be installed here: one for wastewater from homes and businesses, and another for rainwater. Utility companies are already replacing their cables and pipes for water, gas, and electricity. Residents are participating in a sounding board group.
Work on the sewer system in Kortland is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with completion planned for mid-2027. The road will be gradually reopened as the new sewer is installed and the area restored. More information is available on the Riool Kortland page.
Flooding issues
In recent years, residents across Peize have reported flooding issues. Some have experienced waterlogging in their gardens, while others have faced flooding inside their homes. Municipal employees visit residents to investigate the causes. We hope these issues can be resolved. Sometimes, the municipality can take action, but in other cases, the water board or residents themselves may need to address the problem. More information is available on the Wateroverlast Peize page.
Why are there water issues in Peize?
There are several causes. One major factor is that much of Peize’s soil consists of loam, which poorly absorbs water. During heavy or prolonged rainfall, water does not drain away effectively.
Another issue is that some water channels require better maintenance, which the municipality is addressing. Additionally, extreme rainfall has become more frequent in recent years, increasing the likelihood of flooding. The new sewer system is designed to prevent street flooding even during heavy downpours.
Some areas already completed
A few years ago, the De Westerd neighbourhood received a new sewer system and is now prepared for the future. The Brink, in the heart of Peize, has also been completed. We are now laying the groundwork for other projects to ensure that the most significant water issues are resolved across Peize.
