Dutch National Tile-Removal Championship 2026: Out with the tiles, in with the plants
Venray will once again participate in the Dutch National Tile-Removal Championship in 2026. In 2025, municipalities in Limburg collectively removed around 710,000 tiles, creating nearly thirteen football fields' worth of new green space. And this year, we aim to surpass that figure… So get out there and remove those tiles from your garden, replacing them with greenery. Together, we can make our surroundings more beautiful, greener, and healthier.
Want to join in?
Could your garden use a bit more greenery? Or have you always dreamed of creating a beautiful front garden? Here’s how to participate in the Dutch National Tile-Removal Championship:
- Remove tiles from your front, back, or side garden.
- Replace the tiles with greenery.
- Take a proof photo of the pile of removed tiles.
- Report the number of tiles you’ve removed, along with the proof photo, via NK Tegelwippen | Meedoen. Your tiles will then be added to Venray’s total count.
- You can dispose of the removed tiles for free at the milieustation in Venray during the entire competition period from March 19 to October 31, 2026. Show the confirmation email of your participation in the Dutch National Tile-Removal Championship to the staff at the milieustation.
Rules of the game
- Only remove tiles from your own front, back, or side garden. Do not remove tiles from your neighbours’ gardens!
- Be honest about the number of tiles removed. The proof photo must clearly show how many tiles you’ve removed.
- No front garden? In Venray, you can create a side garden without a permit. This garden may be a maximum of 30 cm deep. Leave at least 120 cm of space on the pavement. Read here for the conditions for creating a side garden and check out the climate adaptation subsidy to make greening even more appealing!
Free disposal of removed tiles
If you’ve removed tiles, you can dispose of them free of charge at the milieustation in Venray throughout the competition period from March 19 to October 31, 2026. Show the confirmation email of your participation.
