Impressive opening of exhibition on femicide at De Loper
The opening of the outdoor exhibition on femicide at shopping centre De Loper made a strong impression on visitors on Tuesday, March 17. Mayor Zevenbergen officially opened the exhibition at 4:30 PM, in the presence of relatives, residents and professionals.
We cannot look away from this
“The stories we heard this afternoon show just how deeply femicide cuts into people’s lives,” the mayor said afterwards. “Femicide is violence against women in its most extreme form: violence rooted in control, power and the belief that you have a right to someone. That deserves constant condemnation. It struck me again how often warning signs are present but go unrecognised or unaddressed. That’s why we must keep this conversation going—at home, in the street, at school and at work. And men, including myself, must take the lead: take responsibility, set boundaries and call each other out. Only then can we prevent signals from being missed and situations behind closed doors from escalating.”
Visible warning signs
The outdoor exhibition at De Loper features large display boards showing how intimate partner violence can escalate. Visitors gain insight into the warning signs and red flags that often precede femicide, as well as the impact this violence has on victims and their loved ones.
The exhibition is free to visit from March 17 through April 6, 2026.
Well-attended truck cinema
On opening day, visitors could also watch a short film about femicide in the truck cinema at De Loper. The seven-minute film illustrates how control and violence can develop step by step.
Those who missed the film will get another chance on Friday, March 27, 2026. The truck cinema will return to De Loper from 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Sustained attention
With this exhibition, the municipality of Vlaardingen aims to raise awareness about femicide and help people recognise the signs of intimate partner violence. The exhibition is intended for everyone: residents, bystanders and professionals alike.
