Special guest lessons on war and freedom for group 8
The group 8 classes of the primary schools in Albrandswaard are receiving special guest lessons about World War II these weeks. This is in preparation for the national remembrance of the dead on May 4 and Liberation Day on May 5. Mayor Cees Pille and Mrs. Bertie Barendregt-Dorst of the Committee Commemoration Fallen Albrandswaard were guests on Thursday, March 12, in the class of children's mayor Meera Radjpalsingh at obs Portland.
Stories from close by
Specially for group 8, the committee has composed a lesson program about the war. The pupils hear how the war progressed, but especially what it meant for people in Rhoon and Poortugaal.
An important part of the lesson is a short film about Albrandswaard during wartime. About the invasion, about airport Waalhaven and about what happened at the Sluisje. In it, residents also tell personal stories. The film was specially made for these guest lessons and brings history extra close.
Why do we commemorate?
The guest lessons in the coming weeks are provided by members of the committee, mayor Cees Pille and the aldermen Mario Bianchi and Pieter Kos. They take turns and will visit various schools in the coming weeks.
With these lessons, in preparation for May 4 and 5, they want pupils to think about commemorating, celebrating freedom and the importance of continuing to remember. "We currently see war in many places around the world", according to mayor Cees Pille. "I am grateful that we have been living in freedom for over eighty years. But you see that it is not a matter of course. That is why I think it is important that children hear and see about our history."
Creative conclusion
As part of this program, the pupils make a poem or drawing on the theme of war and/or freedom. A selection of these will be on display on May 4 in the village churches of Rhoon and Poortugaal during the annual remembrance of the dead.
The winning poem and the winning drawing will be published in De Schakel of Tuesday, April 21.
