Natural burial soon possible at Westerweg Cemetery
More and more people are choosing a final resting place in nature. That is why the Alkmaar municipality is designating a section of the Municipal Cemetery on Westerweg for natural burial. This will be possible starting March 30, 2026.
Natural burial only uses biodegradable materials that do not burden the soil. The grave blends into the natural surroundings. A wooden disc serves as a marker, which will eventually decompose. The resting period is indefinite.
First phase with 100 graves
The natural section will be developed in two phases. The first phase will include approximately 100 natural graves, available starting March 30. A second section with over 500 additional plots will follow later.
