Youth ribbon awarded to Marijn and Marinthe following fundraising campaign for Guinea
Marijn (13) and Marinthe (11) from Apeldoorn have received the youth ribbon for their outstanding efforts in support of a charitable cause. Alderman Henk van den Berge presented the ribbon in recognition of their creative and socially impactful initiative. Children’s Mayor Madalie was also present at the ceremony.
The siblings came up with and organized their own fundraising campaign to collect money for the Sint Gabriel Medical Centre in Guinea, West Africa. They gathered old candle wax from churches and went door-to-door collecting candle remnants. Marijn and Marinthe said: “We’re surprised and really happy about it. It wasn’t necessary at all, but it’s obviously great. And who knows, maybe this will encourage people to buy even more candles.”
After school, Marijn and Marinthe melted the collected candle wax to make new candles, which they sold at a small price. Over three months, their campaign raised a total of €21,915.75. The full amount was donated to the Sint Gabriel Medical Centre, a project run by Fidesco Nederland, a Dutch mission organization. The centre provides medical care to the local population in Guinea.
