Informal duo explores possibilities for new coalition in Bergen op Zoom
Messrs. Erik van Merrienboer and Patrick van der Velden will explore in the coming period, in their roles as informateurs, the possibilities for forming a stable coalition and executive board that can rely on fruitful cooperation with the municipal council of Bergen op Zoom. Arjan van der Weegen proposed this on behalf of the largest party, GBWP, during the Clarification Debate on the election results.
Erik van Merrienboer was born and raised in West Brabant and is a highly experienced administrator. Among other roles, he has served as alderman in Eindhoven, director and deputy at the Province of North Brabant, and mayor of the municipality of Terneuzen. In 2023, he was co-formateur for the Brabant administrative agreement and executive board of the Provincial Executive.
Patrick van der Velden has held numerous positions within Bergse politics and served as formateur in a duo role for the municipality of Oosterhout in 2022.
The mandate given to the informateurs is “to investigate which programmatic and political possibilities exist for forming a stable coalition and executive board that can rely on fruitful cooperation with the municipal council, residents, associations, and businesses, based on a broad majority in the municipal council. In this investigation, thoroughness takes precedence over speed.”
The informateurs will speak with all factions in the coming period, with particular focus on the following key points:
- How do you interpret the election results, and are you willing to participate in a coalition and executive board?
- What are the most important goals your faction aims to achieve in the upcoming administrative term?
- Are there any obstacles or even breaking points for cooperation in a coalition with other factions?
- Which coalition is preferred and offers prospects for fruitful cooperation within the executive board and municipal council during the upcoming administrative term?
- How do you envision the collaboration between the coalition, opposition, executive board, organization, and society in the coming council period?
The intention is for the informateurs to produce an objective and professional report of their findings, in which they also indicate which coalition, based on this exploratory phase, could be a promising option. The informateurs will then inform the municipal council of their findings and explain them in a public meeting. Any subsequent formation assignment will then be subject to debate.
