Stop elder abuse: don’t look away, talk about it
Do you notice someone becoming quieter, showing signs of fear or suddenly facing financial difficulties? There may be more going on. Elder abuse occurs more frequently than many people realise. In the Netherlands, about 1 in 20 older adults experience it.
The municipalities of Beverwijk, Heemskerk and Velsen consider it important that everyone can age safely. That is why, together with care organisation Zorgbalans and other municipalities in the region, they are launching the Verborgen Leed (Hidden Suffering) campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of elder abuse and help residents recognise the signs and know what to do.
On verborgen-leed.nl you can find signs to look out for and tips. By being alert and taking action, you can help stop abuse.
It often happens close to home
Elder abuse can involve verbal abuse, belittling, financial exploitation or inadequate care.
Often, it is perpetrated by someone in the immediate circle, such as a partner, child, informal caregiver or professional carer. This makes it difficult to talk about. Feelings of shame and dependency often play a role.
The stories that come to light are harrowing. It is not just about physical violence, but also financial exploitation. That is why it is so important that signs are recognised earlier and people dare to intervene, says councillor Gideon Nijemanting (Velsen).
Are you a victim yourself? Don’t suffer in silence. Talk about it and seek help. You are not alone.
Talk about it and take action
Do you suspect something is wrong? Trust your instincts. Ask a question and show interest. Sometimes, a single conversation is enough to help someone.
Not sure? Seek advice. Sharing your concerns can prevent things from getting worse. The sooner signs are recognised, the sooner unsafe situations can be stopped, says Wianne Brandt, director of Veilig Thuis Kennemerland.
Everyone can make a difference
We all have a role to play in ageing safely. Even a small sign can be significant. A cautious question can sometimes be exactly what is needed. Together, we can prevent a lot, says councillor Piet Burgering (Heemskerk).
Many older adults depend on others. This usually goes well, but not always. If care becomes too heavy a burden, it is important to seek help in time, stresses councillor Sjaak Struijf (Beverwijk).
Don’t look away. Talk about it. Offer help.
Verborgen Leed campaign
The Verborgen Leed campaign is an initiative by the IJmond municipalities of Beverwijk, Heemskerk and Velsen, together with the municipalities of Bloemendaal, Haarlem, Haarlemmermeer, Heemstede and Zandvoort and care organisation Zorgbalans.
