Announcement: Delta Rhine Corridor East Commences
Message from Gasunie and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK)
Gasunie and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) plan to construct a pipeline for transporting CO₂ between Boxtel and Venlo. Work on the plans is now underway. The DRC East will also pass through the municipality of Boxtel.
Learn more about DRC East at the online information session
During an online information session, the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth and Gasunie will provide further details about the DRC East plans. The session will take place on Thursday, April 16, from 19:00 to 20:00. You can view the session via the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) website. The session will also be available for later viewing on this website.
Submit questions for the digital session
You may submit your questions in advance, preferably by Wednesday, April 8. During the session, your questions will be addressed. You can find the question form on the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) website. Your identity will remain anonymous when your questions are answered.
You can now respond to the initial ideas
DRC East involves the construction of a single underground pipeline, including technical installations. This pipeline will transport CO₂ from the German border near Venlo to Boxtel. The route will largely follow the designated area in the Energy Main Structure Programme (the ‘PEH corridor’). You can view the route on the image provided. A more detailed map showing the PEH corridor is available on the Gasunie website. The exact location of the pipelines will be further developed in the next steps.
You may submit feedback on these initial ideas until May 7. You can read more about this in the Intention and Participation Proposal. This document also explains how Gasunie and the Ministry intend to involve you in the process. You can find this document on the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) website. You may also submit your feedback on this webpage.
More information about the content of the plans is available on the Gasunie website. You may also use this website to subscribe to the newsletter.
Why is a new pipeline being built?
The industry faces the challenge of reducing CO₂ emissions and becoming more sustainable. In many cases, industries can transition to electricity to achieve this. Where this is technically or economically unfeasible, fossil fuels may be replaced by alternatives such as hydrogen. However, this is not an option for some industries.
To further reduce CO₂ emissions, CO₂ can be captured at industrial sites and stored in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. This prevents CO₂ from entering the atmosphere. To transport CO₂ to these underground storage sites beneath the North Sea, the DRC East will construct an underground pipeline.
