Launch of Dorpskracht: ‘Resident-led initiatives strengthen the village’
Who knows better what is good for the village than the people who live there? They see what is happening, what is needed, and what works. Based on this idea, the municipality of Cranendonck is launching Dorpskracht today. With this initiative, we aim to motivate residents to work together to turn their ideas into plans and implement them as much as possible themselves. On cranendonck.nl/dorpskracht residents can also find more support for setting up initiatives: practical information, useful tips, inspiring stories from fellow villagers, and a dedicated point of contact within the municipality—a person who will think along with you and assist with the necessary steps.
To mark this occasion, Mayor and concept guardian Roland van Kessel, Alderman Hennie Driessen, and Dorpskracht contact person Jos Sweens joined one such initiative: the walking group ‘Wandelmaatje’ led by initiator Joep Lauxtermann.
“We see that there are already many Cranendonck residents, such as here in Budel-Schoot, who are committed to their village or neighborhood and thus to each other,” says Mayor Roland van Kessel. “These initiatives make our villages stronger every day. We call this Dorpskracht. By giving these initiatives more space and helping them along if needed, we encourage this further.”
Wandelmaatje gets Budel-Schoot moving
In Budel‑Schoot, walking is more than just exercise: it brings people together. This was the inspiration behind Wandelmaatje, the initiative launched in 2021 by Joep Lauxtermann as part of the local platform Sterk Schoot. During his walks, he noticed many people walking alone. “I thought: why not do this together?” His call grew into a group of 24 fellow villagers who arrange meet-ups via WhatsApp—“sometimes with two, sometimes with ten, both are fine.” The members now often walk several kilometers around the village each week, and sometimes venture further afield. “It’s always enjoyable.” Joep is pleased that the municipality joined them for a walk: “It feels like a vote of confidence and shows that what we’re doing matters to the village.”
More about Dorpskracht
In the coming weeks, videos featuring stories of inspiring initiatives from Cranendonck will be shared on cranendonck.nl/dorpskracht and the municipality’s social media channels. “This way, we not only show that a lot of wonderful things are already happening in our villages,” says Alderman Hennie Driessen, “but also that a small idea can grow into something big that strengthens us all. Often, residents don’t even need the municipality for this.” Dorpskracht is the name given to one of the three key priorities of the municipality of Cranendonck: ‘vital communities.’ You can read the full story about Wandelmaatje and how to join a walk at cranendonck.nl/dorpskracht.
