Excavation at Grote Kerkhof
Archeologie Deventer is currently conducting a small-scale archaeological investigation on behalf of Hotel Huis Vermeer. This is in preparation for the installation of an additional water infiltration system. The drilling site is located just inside the cemetery wall of the cemetery near the Lebuinus Church.
A excavation surface has now been prepared, revealing the first six burials. A significant amount of loose bone material has also been found, which was reburied after graves were cleared. Typically, people were buried in shrouds, but at least one individual here was buried fully clothed. Only the buttons remain of the clothing.
Graves uncovered one by one
A corner of the cemetery wall is also visible. Over the coming days, the graves will be uncovered one by one. The skeletons will be carefully cleaned, photographed, and digitally sketched. Samples will then be taken for DNA and isotope analysis. Once everything has been properly documented, the bones will be carefully packed and transported to our office. In some areas, multiple layers of skeletons must be removed to reach the desired depth.
