Sustainable Nearby Map: All Sustainable Addresses Now Available Online
The municipality of Dijk en Waard has introduced the Sustainable Nearby Map, available online at www.dijkenwaard.nl/kaart. Fred Ruiten, alderman for sustainability: “With this interactive map, we make it easier to find local spots where you can borrow, swap, repair, or buy second-hand items.” The map is being launched during the national Circular Economy Week.
Sustainable addresses now available online
With the Sustainable Nearby Map, the municipality of Dijk en Waard aims to encourage residents to give items a second life or purchase second-hand goods. "It’s a great way to get to know your neighborhood better, good for your wallet, and sustainable," says Fred Ruiten. "Under the motto ‘do more with less,’ we save raw materials, reduce waste, and it’s also better for the environment."
What’s on the map?
Many circular initiatives are already active in Dijk en Waard, but they are not yet widely known. The Sustainable Nearby Map brings them all together in one place. The map includes four categories: borrowing and renting (tools, bicycles, trailers, party supplies, toys, and books), repair and maintenance (bicycles, clothing, shoes, electronics, household appliances, and furniture), swapping and trading (neighborhood pantries and mini-libraries), and buying second-hand (clothing, bicycles, thrift stores, and vintage shops).
How does the map work?
The map is easy to use: users can select an option in the legend, such as ‘repair’ or ‘borrow,’ and the corresponding addresses will appear immediately on the map. Users can also enter a postal code to find initiatives in their area.
Submitting an initiative
The municipality hopes to keep the map dynamic through contributions from residents and entrepreneurs. If a sustainable initiative is not yet listed, an email can be sent with the name, description, and address of the initiative. The municipality will then follow up.
