Grant for sustainable sports clubs in Haarlem
Sports clubs in Haarlem can receive funding to make their buildings more energy-efficient. RFC Haarlem Rugby Club demonstrates what is possible. Their old construction shed has been transformed into a modern, gas-free clubhouse. The club has even been nominated for Sports Facility of the Year 2026.
RFC Haarlem is also assisting other clubs. They organise meetings to provide explanations and tips. According to René Verbruggen of the construction committee, collaboration is crucial: “On your own, you can’t achieve anything. Use your network, consult with members, parents, the municipality, SRO, sponsors, and stakeholders. That makes the process better and easier.”
From construction shed to new clubhouse
The club started in the 1980s in an old construction shed. It became too small. Initially, there was no money for a new building. Yet, they made plans. The father of a youth member, who is also an architect, designed the new structure. Members raised funds through actions, such as selling Donald Duck magazines and collecting deposit bottles.
In 2019, the new clubhouse was completed. Since then, the club has gradually made the building more sustainable. It is now gas-free, with 130 solar panels on the roof and heat pumps installed. Since February, solar power has also been stored in a battery.
“Everything we generate during the day can be used in the evening, for example, to power the floodlights. And when the sun rises again, the battery starts recharging.”
Pride and nomination
The nomination means a great deal to the club: “We are proud that the hard work of people inside and outside the club is being recognised. We are the most sustainable rugby club in the northern hemisphere.” RFC Haarlem is one of five finalists. The winner will be announced on 10 June 2026.
