Mayor's column
Last week saw the municipal council elections. In our municipality, they went smoothly and without incident. I am very pleased about this, because this doesn’t happen by itself.
Behind the scenes, everything was meticulously planned. Where would we set up the polling stations? How could we ensure that everyone could vote independently? How many people would we need at each location? It was a puzzle, a matter of planning and forward-thinking. All with one goal: to make it as easy as possible for residents to cast their votes.
I cast my vote alongside Lucas, a member of the Youth Municipal Council. It was his first time voting. It was wonderful to see his enthusiasm. He told me he had also encouraged other young people to vote. Great!
After that, I took the wheel for the AutoMobiel service: volunteers pick up and transport voters who are less mobile to the polling station. I had the pleasure of driving Mr. Klijsen. It was a pleasant trip, but above all, a valuable initiative. Together, we ensure that everyone can participate.
In Nieuw-Vennep, I welcomed an enthusiastic primary school class. They were given a tour of the polling station. They didn’t understand everything yet, but they were curious. That’s what makes it so special. With curiosity as a foundation, step by step, they begin to grasp how important voting is.
On March 19, I attended the central vote count in the Vanzanten Hall. It was a festive occasion there too. In the hall decorated with streamers, volunteers counted all the votes at the candidate level. Hard work, but also very enjoyable.
I would like to thank everyone who cast a vote—the turnout was a few percentage points higher than in 2022. And of course, I want to thank all the staff and volunteers who made these elections possible. So many people who contribute, participate, and are involved: I am incredibly proud of that. Now, we wait for the final results on March 26!
