We are focusing on expanding residential caravan sites
Wednesday, 1 April 2026
We will be expanding the number of residential caravan sites over the next 10 years. Research shows that more sites are needed, for example, for children currently living on caravan sites and for former residents who wish to return. In total, Helmond requires 47 new sites. We will incorporate this requirement into the city’s overall new-build ambitions and growth targets. You can read more about this in this news article.
“Helmond is making a major leap forward. We want to add more homes and increase the housing options available to (future) residents. We also want to provide the best possible support for caravan residents,” says councillor Gaby van den Waardenburg. “With this policy, we aim to ensure good housing that aligns with the living culture and unique housing needs of caravan residents, namely living in a caravan and in a family setting.”
New policy
The new policy outlines how many residential caravan sites are needed in Helmond and under what conditions additional sites can be created at existing locations. The policy also changes how sites and rented caravans are allocated.
Heirs of tenants with their own caravan will be given priority when renting a site, provided they are (former) caravan residents from Helmond. This helps preserve the caravan culture and strengthens ties within the caravan community.
This policy aligns with rulings from the European Court of Human Rights, which state that governments must ensure housing for caravan residents and take into account their cultural identity and desire to live together as a family.
The housing corporations in Helmond will manage the allocation of sites. Are you part of the local caravan community in Helmond and would you like to rent a caravan at one of the caravan sites in Helmond? Then you must be registered with Wooniezie.
What’s next?
We are exploring where we can create additional sites at existing caravan locations, giving (grand)children the opportunity to continue living with their families. This is only possible if our additional research confirms there is enough space, which varies by location.
We cannot create all new sites at existing locations, as there simply isn’t enough space. That’s why we are also looking for new locations for one or more new caravan sites in Helmond.
