Laren takes steps toward sustainable street cleaning and weed control
This spring, the municipality of Laren is taking a significant step toward a more sustainable living environment. Starting in mid-March, you’ll notice two new, innovative machines in our streets: a fully electric street sweeper and a hot water machine that tackles weeds in an eco-friendly way.
Quiet and clean: the new electric street sweeper
The brand-new electric street sweeper, just as large and powerful as the familiar diesel model, can operate for an entire 8-hour workday on a single charge. This means our streets will now be swept without emissions and much more quietly. Not only is this better for the climate, but it’s also more pleasant for residents. The sweeping routes and times will remain the same as you’re used to.
In the town center, a diesel machine will continue to operate for the time being.
Weed control with hot water
Weed control is also getting a sustainable upgrade. Laren is introducing a self-developed hot water machine that uses water at around 103 degrees Celsius. By applying a thin layer of boiling water to the pavement, weeds are effectively controlled without the use of chemicals.
This new machine has been designed with efficiency and safety in mind. It can carry a large amount of water, allowing it to work longer in residential areas. Additionally, the machine operates largely autonomously, reducing the need for workers to stand by the roadside.
Councillor Jan van Midden: “With these new machines, we’re taking a concrete step toward a cleaner and more future-proof Laren. We’re showing that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. I’m proud that we can carry out our daily work in a quieter, cleaner, and safer way.”
