Lelystad Quiz Connects Residents and Brings the City to Life
More than 150 residents attended the final evening of the Lelystad Quiz. The top three teams won not only a trophy but also a cash prize to be spent on a charitable cause of their choice in Lelystad. The Lelystad Quiz was the brainchild of residents Meggy van Els and Wendy Hoeven, who spent 12 months preparing before bringing the event to life.
Engaging Residents with the City and Each Other
The Lelystad Quiz engages residents in an accessible and positive way, fostering connections not only with the city but also among participants. Mayor Mieke Baltus stated: “The Lelystad Quiz demonstrates the energy present in our city. People of all ages and from all neighborhoods come together. This success is thanks to the tremendous dedication of the initiators, volunteers, and participants. Our city has become an even better place to live as a result.” The mayor also expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the two initiators.
Idea Facilitator
Meggy van Els and Wendy Hoeven saw a similar game in Dronten and decided to create a version for Lelystad. To bring their plan to fruition, they approached the municipality for guidance on organizing such a large-scale event. Ineke Ketting, idea facilitator at the Lelystad municipality, guided the initiators throughout the entire process. Ketting said: “By connecting them with the right people, the idea grew into a citywide event. It’s wonderful to see how this single idea from two individuals brought the city to life for three days.”
Structure
The Lelystad Quiz is all about connection. Teams were encouraged to look beyond their usual circles when forming their groups, meeting new people in the process. On February 16, an instruction evening was held where teams began exchanging puzzle pieces and making new contacts. On Saturday, March 7, residents participated in the four-hour quiz. Teams were highly competitive, working late into the evening to submit their answers before the 11:00 PM deadline. The final evening on March 28 at De Kubus included a recap followed by the prize ceremony.
Charitable Cause
The top three teams won not only eternal glory and a trophy but also cash prizes. These amounts are not paid out personally but are donated to a charitable cause in Lelystad, such as a sports club or a neighbor raising funds for a national charity.
