Province of Limburg and Municipality of Maastricht sign Livability Agreement for TregaZinkwit area development
The Municipality of Maastricht is taking a significant step in the area development of TregaZinkwit with support from the Provincial Livability Fund. The signing of the livability agreement by Deputy Michael Theuns and Alderman for Urban Development, Frans Bastiaens, has paved the way for targeted investment in the livability of this new, forward-thinking urban district. The Municipality and Province are jointly investing a total of 2 million euros in additional measures that contribute to a green, healthy, and socially connected urban district.
Why this investment?
When establishing the land exploitation and development frameworks in November 2024, the municipal council opted for an ambitious development of the TregaZinkwit site, focusing on high-quality livability. The additional measures from the livability approach make it possible to further enhance the quality of the public space, contribute to climate adaptation, and foster strong social cohesion in the district.
Frans Bastiaens, Alderman for Urban Development: "With this investment, we are fully committed to creating an urban district where health, greenery, and social interaction are central. Thanks to the Province’s contribution, we can set the bar higher and create a district that is ready for the future. TregaZinkwit will become a place where residents feel at home and where the quality of the living environment truly makes a difference."
Provincial Livability Fund 2024–2026
The area development on the former TregaZinkwit site forms the northernmost point within the area vision of the railway zone, GRAND MSTRG, and aligns seamlessly with the objectives of the Provincial Livability Fund 2024–2026. With this agreement, the Province expresses its intention to contribute 1 million euros from the Livability Approach to a climate-resilient, healthy, and future-oriented urban district; the Municipality of Maastricht is providing an equal amount.
Michael Theuns, Deputy for Space, Housing, Water, Soil, and Livability: “I am proud that, together with the Municipality of Maastricht, we can truly invest in a pleasant, green, and healthy district where people know each other and can enjoy a beautiful living environment together. Together, we ensure that TregaZinkwit is not just a new place to live, but a district where you truly want to be. As the Province of Limburg, we are happy to contribute to this.”
Next steps: building the future together
Following the signing of the agreement, the subsidy application will be submitted to the Province. Once approved, the further elaboration and implementation of the package of measures will begin, in conjunction with the development of public space and housing construction.
The Municipality will continue to adopt a participatory approach. Residents, the Limmel neighborhood network, and other area partners will be closely involved in the further planning process.
