Public consultation launched for climate-resilient redesign of Buitenhovelaan
The municipality has launched the public consultation process for the preliminary design of the redesign of (part of) Buitenhovelaan and its surroundings in the Dauwendaele district. Residents can provide feedback on the plans from March 25 to May 5, 2026, which aim to prepare the street for the impacts of climate change.
Buitenhovelaan was constructed in the 1970s and, after more than fifty years, is in need of major maintenance. According to the municipality, the redesign offers opportunities to make the living environment more climate-friendly, sustainable, and future-proof. A new design has been developed in collaboration with project team Sweco, which was previously discussed with residents.
Long lead-up to the design
Public participation for the project began as early as October 25, 2021. Residents shared their wishes and concerns via a survey, which were incorporated into an initial preliminary design. Although an official public consultation was announced on December 8, 2021, it was postponed due to the investigation into the installation of a heat network.
The heat network study was discontinued in November 2023 because its implementation proved financially unfeasible. This allowed the public consultation for the redesign to proceed.
Smaller project area
The project area has been reduced, as part of it overlaps with the Hart van Dauwendaele project. That section is now being addressed within that initiative.
