Column Theo Segers: We have won!
This is the title of the column following the results of the 2026 municipal council elections. The ballot boxes have been closed, and on the evening of 18 March, the results per polling station were announced. There have been gains and losses. Due to the growth of the municipality of Molenlanden, we have gained two council seats. This has increased our representation from 27 to 29 seats. You could argue that not much has changed: a gain of one seat for the SGP at the expense of the ChristenUnie. And yet: we have all won.
Voter turnout in the 2022 municipal council elections was 66.7%. In these elections, 69.8% of eligible voters cast their ballots. And that is a win. We—the parties, the clerk’s office, the councillors, the executive board, and I—are pleased that turnout has increased. Municipal politics matters. By voting, you indirectly have a say in decisions. It’s great that nearly 70% of eligible voters cast their ballots. I didn’t even need to launch a campaign, such as descending from the Euromast in Rotterdam with a colleague. But I do promise that if we reach 75% turnout in 2030, I will descend from the Euromast—from the highest point to ground level (though I’ll take the lift).
I would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this fair democratic election. It’s important for residents to be involved in Molenlanden. Molenlanden is all of us. Every day.
