Montferland Energy-Neutral: How Are We Working on the Energy Transition in Montferland?
Our goal is clear: by 2050 at the latest, the Achterhoek region will be energy-neutral. This means saving energy where possible and generating the remaining energy entirely sustainably. As a municipality, we are not doing this alone: for years, we have been working together with partners such as housing corporation Plavei, local energy cooperatives, and the Achterhoek Energy Desk to tackle this challenge.
Starting today, you can view the Montferland Energy-Neutral 2026 project agenda and the 2025 monitoring report on our website. Both documents have been approved by the municipal executive board.
What Do They Contain?
2025 Monitoring Report
The report provides a review of the 24 projects from 2025 and the results achieved. For example, we see that more and more residents are turning to the Achterhoek Energy Desk for assistance in making their homes more sustainable. In 2025, there were also many applications for the Achterhoek Insulation Subsidy, and we reached a milestone: the Regional Energy Strategy 2.0 was approved by the Achterhoek municipal boards. Additionally, we placed extra emphasis on awareness-raising (including through surveys and Climate Week).
2026 Project Agenda
The project agenda looks ahead. In 2026, we will be working on 21 projects. These projects are divided into four themes: Sustainable Living, Sustainable Buildings, Sustainable Generation, and Sustainable Awareness, Communication & Monitoring. For each theme, the following has been outlined:
- Which policies we (will) update or evaluate;
- How we collaborate in the region;
- Which projects we will carry out and their expected impact;
- What staffing is required;
- How financial resources will be allocated.
Both documents are part of the Montferland Energy-Neutral Implementation Framework 2024–2027, which was approved by the municipal council. This framework outlines, in broad terms, how we as a municipality will work on the energy transition between 2024 and 2027 and what interim goals we aim to achieve by 2050.
