Major maintenance on the A2: 3 April - 11 May
From Friday 3 April to Monday 11 May 2026, Rijkswaterstaat will carry out major maintenance work on the A2 between junction Everdingen and junction Oudenrijn (towards Utrecht) for six consecutive weekends. A total of 11 kilometres of road surface will be replaced with quieter asphalt. At the same time, they will also carry out maintenance on guardrails, signage, bridges, viaducts, service areas and verges. These works are necessary because the road surface has reached the end of its service life. Road users should expect diversions and additional travel time of up to 60 minutes.
When will work be carried out on the A2?
In April and May, the A2 towards Utrecht will be closed for six consecutive weekends between junction Everdingen and junction Oudenrijn:
- Friday 3 April 22:00 – Monday 6 April 05:00
- Friday 10 April 22:00 – Monday 13 April 05:00
- Friday 17 April 22:00 – Monday 20 April 05:00
- Friday 24 April 22:00 – Monday 27 April 05:00
- Friday 1 May 22:00 – Monday 4 May 05:00
- Friday 8 May 22:00 – Monday 11 May 05:00
Rijkswaterstaat will begin closing slip roads and exits at 20:00 on Fridays.
Diversion
Traffic will be diverted via the A27 towards Utrecht, to join the A12 towards The Hague at junction Lunetten.
Advice for road users
Unfortunately, maintenance work cannot be carried out without causing disruption. Rijkswaterstaat advises:
- Plan your journey carefully.
- Do not travel on the road during the works unless absolutely necessary.
- If you must travel, consider alternative transport such as cycling, train or tram.
- If you must travel by car, do not join the queue and follow the official diversion route. Always check VanAnaarBeter.nl for the most up-to-date travel information before you set off. Together we can keep the region accessible.
Measures against rat-running
In 2024, major maintenance work was carried out on the same section of the A2, but in the direction of 's-Hertogenbosch. At the time, there was extra congestion in and around Utrecht, including on local roads. Based on these experiences, measures have been taken to better distribute traffic and reduce nuisance.
For example, in collaboration with the municipality of Nieuwegein, traffic lights will temporarily be adjusted. They will stay red for longer for traffic coming from the A27 heading into the city. In addition, traffic controllers will be deployed and routes will be closed where necessary.
The traffic situation will be continuously monitored. If necessary, additional measures will be taken during the works. In addition, closures will now start on Friday evening instead of Thursday evening. Because the road will be closed in the opposite direction this time, Rijkswaterstaat expects the heaviest traffic congestion to occur near junction Everdingen.
Concurrent works
Due to the busy schedule, it is sometimes unavoidable that work will be carried out in multiple locations at the same time.
For example, during the weekend of 3 to 6 April 2026, there will also be works on the A27 Houten Hooipolder section. The A2 towards 's-Hertogenbosch will be closed near junction Everdingen. However, the connecting road from the A27 from Utrecht to the A2 towards 's-Hertogenbosch will remain open.
Rijkswaterstaat will also be working on the A12 between The Hague and Nieuwerbrug during the weekends of 1 to 4 and 8 to 11 May. The A12 towards The Hague will be closed from junction Oudenrijn to the N11 junction near Bodegraven. From junction Oudenrijn to Woerden, one lane will be available for destination traffic.
