Bike lessons help newcomers on the road to independence
Successful completion of municipal bike lessons with cycling certificate.
Bike lessons as a stepping stone to independence
For many residents, cycling seems obvious. Yet this is not the case for everyone who comes to live in Oosterhout. Mastering cycling skills makes a big difference, as it increases independence, mobility, and opportunities to participate in work, school, volunteering, or daily activities. That is why the municipality of Oosterhout has been offering cycling lessons since last year. The cycling lessons are set up in collaboration with AndersWerkt, Stichting Vrouwen voor Elkaar, and the Islamic community, which made their premises available for this purpose. Together, they help newcomers find their place in Oosterhout society through volunteering or social activities.
The cycling lessons program consists of two months of practical lessons, followed by a month of theory training. Once participants have mastered cycling sufficiently, they receive a participation certificate.
Participant Najah Borazan: “I never expected to learn how to cycle, but I did it!”
Joint success
Thirteen newcomers took part in the cycling lessons last year. Ten participants were able to complete the program successfully right away. Three others took additional lessons in a new group. Eleven participants already received their cycling certificate, and on Tuesday, March 31, the successful participation of this group of participants was celebrated with the presentation of the final certificates.
Participant Ahlaam Alyousef: “Cycling gives me the confidence that I can also achieve difficult things.”
Follow-up
The cycling program remains accessible to newcomers who would like to learn (or improve) cycling in order to increase their independence. This week, a new group starts practicing every Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 at Moskee Almohsin in Oosterhout, located at Beneluxweg 99. Interested newcomers can register by calling 06 57 36 46 47.
Councilor Willem-Jan van der Zanden: “For many Oosterhout residents, cycling is so obvious that we sometimes no longer realize how much freedom and opportunities it offers. With these cycling lessons, we are helping newcomers, both literally and figuratively, on their way. It makes them more independent, expands their opportunities, and accelerates their participation in society. I am proud of the commitment of all organizations that make this possible and especially of the participants who have taken this step.”
