Formation of the new coalition for the municipality of Opmeer begins

The formation of a new coalition in Opmeer began last Friday. KERN8, which secured the most votes in the municipal elections on March 18, is taking the lead in this process. KERN8 will engage in discussions with all other political parties. The goal of these exploratory talks is to determine which parties can collaborate and who will continue negotiations to reach a coalition agreement.

Once all discussions are completed, KERN8 will prepare a public final report. This report will be discussed during the municipal council meeting on April 1. If the report cannot be finalized by then, an additional council meeting will be scheduled shortly thereafter.

What exactly does a ‘coalition’ entail?

In the municipal council, a decision can only be made if more than half of the council members agree. No single political party holds enough seats to do this alone. Therefore, political parties must work together to implement plans. During this formation process, parties will discuss potential collaborations. Parties that decide to work together form a coalition. They agree on the plans they wish to implement over the next four years, documenting these in a ‘coalition agreement.’ The coalition parties also propose candidates for aldermen. The municipal council decides on the appointment of these aldermen. After their appointment, the aldermen, together with the mayor, form the executive board (B&W). During the new term, they will work with the municipal council to achieve the ambitions outlined in the coalition agreement.
