New CO2 pipeline to cut emissions: Have your say on the Boxtel-Venlo route
A new underground pipeline will transport CO2 from industries near Venlo to storage sites under the North Sea, helping reduce emissions. Residents along the route can attend an online session or submit feedback until May 7, 2026.

Project to construct CO2 pipeline
Gasunie and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) plan to construct a pipeline for transporting CO2 between Boxtel and Venlo. The pipeline will also pass through the municipality of Peel en Maas. The project is called the Delta Rhine Corridor (DRC) Oost. Work on the plans is now underway.
Online information session
In an online information session, the Ministry and Gasunie will explain the plans for DRC Oost. The online session will take place on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The session will also be available for viewing afterward on this website.
Submitting questions
You can submit your questions in advance. These will be answered during the session. You can find the form on the RVO website. The Ministry and Gasunie kindly request that you submit your questions by Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Your anonymity will be maintained when answering your questions.
Providing feedback
DRC Oost involves the construction of a single underground pipeline, including technical installations. This pipeline will be used to transport CO2 from the German border near Venlo to Boxtel. The route will largely follow the designated area in the Energy Main Structure Programme (the ‘PEH strip’). You can view the route on the image (PDF, 203.7 kB).
A more detailed map showing the PEH strip is available on the Gasunie website. The exact location of the pipelines will be further developed in the next steps.
You can provide feedback on these initial ideas until May 7, 2026. More information is available in the Intention and Proposal for Participation. This document also explains how the Ministry and Gasunie plan to involve you in the process. You can submit your feedback on this webpage as well.
For more information about the plans, visit the Gasunie website. You can also sign up for the newsletter via this website.
Why is a new pipeline being built?
The industry faces the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions and becoming more sustainable. In many cases, this can be achieved by switching to electricity wherever possible. Where this is not feasible, fossil fuels can be replaced by alternatives such as hydrogen. However, this is not an option for some industries.
To still reduce CO2 emissions, CO2 can be captured at industrial sites and stored in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. This prevents CO2 from entering the atmosphere. To transport CO2 to these underground storage sites under the North Sea, DRC Oost will construct an underground pipeline.
