Students experience the coolest PE lesson ever
What is it like to exercise with a disability? Year 5 and 6 pupils from various primary schools in Ridderkerk now know. Last week, they took part in the PE lesson (S)Cool on Wheels at De Fakkel sports hall.
During this lesson, the children experienced what it is like to live and exercise with a disability. They attended workshops such as wheelchair basketball, wheelchair skills, sitting volleyball and goalball. They were also able to ask questions to Ridderkerk resident Ronald van Dort. He lost his legs due to a landmine in Afghanistan but still plays a lot of sports.
The pupils discovered that exercising with a disability can be challenging, but is certainly possible. They saw how much perseverance and strength is required. They learned that a disability does not determine what someone can achieve.
Councillor Fleur Stip and child mayor Lisa Nelemans were also present. Councillor Stip: “It is wonderful to see how children marvel, ask questions and take part with so much enthusiasm in, for example, wheelchair basketball. As a municipality, we are proud that we can promote understanding of life and exercise with a disability in this way.” Child mayor Lisa also took part in the (S)Cool on Wheels workshops. “It was a special experience; now I know what it is like to exercise with a disability.”
(S)Cool on Wheels is an initiative of the Dutch Disability Sports Fund. The Ridderkerk lesson was organised by the Sportstimulering Team of Facet Ridderkerk, together with the BEN Foundation (Basketball Experience NL). The project receives financial support from the Ridderkerk Sports Agreement.
