Start of realization of (re)new construction of ROER College Schöndeln
The school board of Stichting Onderwijs Midden-Limburg (SOML) and the municipality of Roermond have reached an important milestone in the development of a future-proof educational campus for ROER College Schöndeln. On March 26, 2026, both parties signed the cooperation and realization agreement. This paves the way for the tendering, preparation, and execution of the (re)new construction.
The new educational campus will be built on Heinsbergerweg in Roermond and will accommodate approximately 1,400 students in pre-vocational secondary education (vmbo-tl), senior general secondary education (havo), and pre-university education (vwo). The buildings will be developed as a healthy, sustainable, and (near) energy-neutral learning environment.
Councilor Felix van Ballegooij (education, sports, and neighborhoods) stated: “It’s great that we can now start realizing our plans and those of SOML. Soon, children will be able to learn in a beautifully renovated, sustainable building in a green setting. And in the future, they may even be able to engage in sports and physical activity during or after school hours. We are still exploring whether building a sports hall on this site is feasible.”
Constructive collaboration
The project contributes to the implementation of the Integral Housing Plan for Education 2020–2040.
Ralph Henssen, Chair of the Board of SOML: “We are creating a future-proof, sustainable, and inspiring educational campus where our students and staff can achieve their best. It’s wonderful to see how the familiar, historic heart of the school will seamlessly blend with modern and green facilities. Thanks to the constructive collaboration between the municipality of Roermond and SOML, this beautiful learning environment is now within reach.”
Preservation of cultural-historical values
A key principle in the plans is the preservation of the monumental central hall of the current school building, including the existing artworks. Following additional research in 2025, the design has been adjusted to ensure this culturally valuable component is preserved and given a prominent place within the new campus.
Space for sports and social added value
Parallel to the campus development, the municipality is exploring the possibility of building a full-fledged sports hall. This could be used for education, (recreational) sports, and official competitions. The need for this is significant, partly due to the high occupancy of existing sports facilities in Roermond.
Construction start in 2027
With the signing of the agreement, the next phase begins: tendering, further preparation, and execution of the construction. The municipality and SOML expect that construction of the new educational campus can start in 2027.
