Mayor announces official results of municipal council elections
Mayor Harald Bergmann announced on Thursday 26 March, during a session of the Central Electoral Office, the official results of the municipal council elections in Schiedam, which took place on 18 March 2026. The seat distribution remains unchanged. This means that List 1 – a combination of GroenLinks, PvdA and Progressief Schiedam – remains the largest party with eight seats.
The mayor provided those present in the Aleidazaal with a brief explanation of the procedure for this session and the process that preceded it.
Of the 64,528 eligible voters in Schiedam, 43.5 per cent cast their vote. The turnout was thus 1.3 percentage points higher than in the previous municipal council elections in 2022.
Process completed without incident
The Central Electoral Office concludes that no irregularities or anomalies occurred during any of the steps in the election process that would cast doubt on the reliability of the election results. The counting and all related procedures were carried out correctly.
Recount
Nevertheless, a brief recount took place on Tuesday at the initiative of the Central Electoral Office, following a report resulting from the data analysis by the Electoral Council. This concerned candidates 8 and 9 on List 1 at polling station Schiedam Centrum station. Different numbers had been expected. The recount revealed that the results for candidates 8 and 9 had accidentally been swapped, as suspected by the Electoral Council. This error has now been corrected, and a new record of proceedings has been drawn up and published on the Schiedam municipal website. This outcome has no impact on the final results of the municipal council elections.
Seat distribution
A total of 37 seats are to be allocated. That is two more than four years ago. This is due to the recent population growth in Schiedam. The population now stands at 82,055, entitling Schiedam to two additional seats.
A total of 27,963 votes were cast. Of these,
- 27,805 were validly cast for one of the candidates (99.43 per cent)
- 77 were blank (0.28 per cent)
- 81 were invalid (0.29 per cent)
