Nearly €400,000 from the province for entrepreneurs to invest in sustainability
The province of South Holland has awarded two sustainability grants to entrepreneurs in the Wilhelminahaven. The total amount is €380,000. Alderman Frans Hamerslag, who is responsible for economy and sustainability among other portfolios, visited several entrepreneurs on Tuesday to share the good news with them.
With the funds, entrepreneurs in the Wilhelminahaven can invest in a sustainable future, such as the installation of over 1,200 solar panels and the replacement of lighting with LED fixtures. The money can also be used to purchase a heat pump, a large battery, motion sensors, and to improve air handling systems in various business premises.

Collaboration among entrepreneurs is a requirement for receiving the grant and was made possible thanks to the municipality of Schiedam and the SchiedamHavens Entrepreneurs Association. The following companies participated in this grant round: Huisman, Unicoat, DHG, Klasmann Deilmann, Royal Cement, and Van de Kooij Groep.
A new step toward a sustainable future
Alderman Frans Hamerslag, who oversees economy and sustainability among other portfolios, is pleased with the grant award. “This is an important step toward a climate-neutral business sector. We want our companies to be future-proof and less dependent on fossil fuels. A contribution from the province of this magnitude is a huge help and makes the necessary steps easier to take,” said the alderman.
Companies working together
Pieter Sneep, founder of the SchiedamHavens Entrepreneurs Association, is also delighted with the grant award. “As an association, we want to give sustainability an extra boost. We are doing this together; we are taking this step collectively,” he said. “Without collaboration, this simply isn’t possible.”
The SchiedamHavens Entrepreneurs Association submitted two grant applications to the province of South Holland in 2022 and received €400,000 in subsidies. The province subsidizes 20% of the costs if at least three entrepreneurs on the same business park simultaneously invest in sustainability. The entrepreneurs cover the remaining 80%. The total investment by entrepreneurs and the province in sustainability over the past three years amounts to €3.8 million.
