Update Burgemeester Winklerplein
There has been less news about Burgemeester Winklerplein recently, but that does not mean nothing has happened. Behind the scenes, a lot has been going on, and the redevelopment is now taking a new step. The municipality of Sliedrecht is in discussions with various parties about how the square and the shopping centre should be further developed. Meanwhile, there is some visible activity on the square itself: the municipality is creating temporary green spaces. These are beneficial for the trees and also add more greenery to the area.
Councillor Cees Paas: “We are pleased that the discussions are getting underway. It is important for Sliedrecht that Burgemeester Winklerplein continues to develop into an attractive and vibrant central area. At the same time, we want to show that we are not standing still. A lot is happening on and around the square. We are demonstrating that we are making progress.”
Redevelopment in full swing
The municipality has been working for some time on improving Burgemeester Winklerplein. The redevelopment has been divided into four construction phases. The first two phases (construction phases A and D) have now been completed. With the discussions with developer ABB and the intended developer of block C, the next phase is in sight, meaning the development of the other two construction phases (phases B and C) of the project is now on the horizon.
- For construction phase B (the vacant lot), the design (Windroos) was on public display from 19 December 2025 to 30 January 2026. During this period, four objections were submitted. The municipality is currently assessing and responding to these and expects to submit an environmental plan to the municipal council shortly.
- For construction phase C, a plan has been submitted and discussions with the intended developer have begun. Both parties are exploring how the plans can be further developed and finalised. Once this has been done, more information will be made public. The municipality’s aim is to start the permit procedures as soon as possible thereafter.
Activity on the square
In addition to administrative progress, visible steps are now being taken. To give the square a better appearance, temporary green spaces are being created. These green areas will improve conditions for the trees. This is a temporary greening measure until the square is renovated.
Facade subsidy
The retailers at Burgemeester Winklerplein will have the opportunity to apply for a subsidy to improve their shop fronts. A more attractive façade will contribute to a better overall appearance. The façade subsidy (a government contribution) has been established in consultation with the retailers concerned and the municipality’s centre manager.
Next steps in 2026
This year, plans for the square will be further developed. Residents will be actively involved in this process. Participation will remain an important part of the process. In 2026, the municipality also intends to finalise agreements on construction phase C in an agreement with the intended developer. The start of construction for phase B will depend on any objections raised in the spatial planning procedure.
