More primary schools participate in Enriched School Day
The municipality of Stadskanaal is expanding the Tijd voor Toekomst – Enriched School Day program in the coming school years. In the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years, eight primary schools will participate in the program. Previously, two schools participated through a subsidy from the national government and the Regio Deal. Thanks to additional support from the Regio Deal, the National Program Groningen, and the province, the program can now be temporarily expanded.
With the Enriched School Day, students get extra activities alongside their regular lessons. They can, for example, get acquainted with sports, culture, technology, or creative activities. This way, children discover their talents, gain new experiences, and work on their self-confidence. The program helps to reduce inequality of opportunity, so that every child, regardless of background, has the space to develop broadly. Alderwoman Ingrid Sterenborg is pleased with the expansion: “It is special that we dare to do this together. This requires commitment from education, the municipality, and the financiers. That has been the basis that has ensured the money is used for the benefit of the children.”
Schools will start working on the organization of the activities and coordination within the school in the coming period. They will collaborate with Stichting Welstad, which supports the cooperation between schools and partners. The expansion is seen as an experimental phase and possibly a precursor to measures from the Social Agenda of Nij Begun. Together, the municipality, schools, and partners are taking an important step to reach more children with an enriched and inspiring (education) program.
