A safe living place in Steenbergen for young people
In a building on Grote Kerkstraat in Steenbergen, care provider 't Huisje, acting on behalf of Prezent Wonen, offers a safe and stable living place to five young people who temporarily cannot live at home. They receive 24-hour guidance each day and work step by step towards a stable future, with attention to school, work and independence. The home is small-scale and designed to feel as much like home as possible.
Sometimes things don’t go well at home. For a young person, it is then very important to have a safe and stable place to come to rest and take steps forward again. Through structure and the proximity of guidance, they can develop and look ahead again.
A necessary step in the youth care region
The municipality of Steenbergen supports this initiative by care provider 't Huisje, acting on behalf of Prezent Wonen. The living place aligns with the agreements made by the nine cooperating municipalities in the Youth Care Region West-Brabant West. In the region, there is a shortage of suitable places for young people who temporarily cannot live at home, partly due to the transition to small-scale living places.
With this development, we as a municipality are contributing to a shared regional goal and vision: ensuring that young people receive the help they need, as close to home as possible and in an environment that feels as much like home as possible.
Working towards a stable future
There is 24-hour guidance available, and the support the young people receive is tailored to what they need to work towards a stable outlook. This includes support with school or work, creating structure in the day and developing practical skills and independence. Thanks to the small-scale setting, there is plenty of personal attention and room to take steps at their own pace towards the future.
Connected to the community
All parties involved consider it important to maintain a good relationship with the neighbourhood. The care provider therefore invites local residents to get to know them. They also ensure clear agreements and a point of contact. Young people are encouraged to participate in local associations, in the neighbourhood and to build contacts so they can find their place in society.
The plans fit within the zoning of the building and meet the municipal requirements. Alderman Esther Prent is very supportive of the development by Prezent Wonen and wishes 't Huisje success in implementing their plans:
"For young people for whom things aren’t going well at home, it is incredibly important that there is a place where they feel safe and can be themselves. A place where there is peace and where they can look ahead again step by step. I am pleased that we can offer five young people such a place here in Steenbergen. It fits nicely with the agreements we have made in the Youth Care Region West-Brabant West. In this way, we are taking joint responsibility to provide young people with the support they need."
't Huisje is also pleased to be able to start work at this new location, says Aimane Hadj Aissa, director of 't Huisje:
"From Prezent Wonen, 't Huisje is present 24/7 for young people, and therefore also for the neighbourhood. Together, we ensure a pleasant environment in which we are close, accessible and open in our contact with everyone."
