ROVA starts random PMD waste checks to boost recycling rates
Starting this month, ROVA will inspect PMD waste containers for incorrect items like food waste or glass. Containers with errors won’t be emptied until sorted properly, aiming to reduce waste incineration and save costs for residents and the environment.

ROVA to conduct random checks on PMD containers for correct contents
The municipality and ROVA aim to improve the quality of collected recyclables together with residents. Only properly separated materials can be recycled. Unfortunately, we still find items in PMD containers that do not belong there, such as food waste, glass, hard plastics, or textiles. This results in valuable materials being unnecessarily incinerated, which is wasteful, costly, and harmful to the environment.
Therefore, ROVA will conduct random checks on PMD containers in the coming period. If ROVA encounters a container with many incorrect items, an employee will attach a card to the container listing the materials found. The container will not be emptied. If you remove the incorrect materials, it will be emptied during the next collection round. This way, we hope to ultimately collect only properly separated waste and recyclables.
PMD = plastic packaging, metal packaging, and beverage cartons
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine what does or does not belong in the PMD container. PMD stands for plastic packaging, metal packaging, and beverage cartons. Unsure? Check the ROVA sorting guide via the ROVA app or www.rova.nl/scheidingswijzer. Together, we can ensure properly separated PMD, which is used to make new products such as street furniture and fleece sweaters.
