New boulevard in Scheveningen ready for the beach season
Scheveningen now has a new boulevard. The section between De Pier and museum Beelden aan Zee has been renovated and is ready for the beach season. On Thursday, April 2, 2026, Queen Máxima will officially open the boulevard.
The renovation of the boulevard took more than two years. The area is now about 10 meters wider and greener in most places. In front of the Kurhaus, there is a central square with space for events. A wide 30-meter staircase and two new ramps now connect the boulevard directly to the beach. The staircase stands out due to the restored monument Leger en Vloot.
Beach pavilions in new locations
During the renovation, the beach pavilions were temporarily located near the construction site. They have now moved to their new spots along the boulevard. In April and May, beach entrepreneurs will organize various activities on the boulevard for visitors.
Scheveningen gradually being upgraded
The new boulevard is part of the municipality’s plans to upgrade Scheveningen. The municipality and businesses are working together on this. Earlier, the Zuid- and Noordboulevard were already renovated. In the coming years, the entrances to Scheveningen will also be upgraded. Businesses are investing in a new Pier, the renovation of the Palace Promenade, and the Northern Breakwater.
Activities during the beach season
- On Friday, April 2, Mars et Historia and the First World War Study Center will host a mini-symposium at museum Beelden aan Zee from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. This celebrates the new location of the Leger en Vloot monument.
- On Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, Kidsfest aan Zee will take place, featuring a program full of music, dance, and games.
- From Wednesday, May 13, to Friday, May 15, robots will take over the boulevard during the European Robotics League.
- On Sunday, May 31, the boulevard will be filled with Volkswagen classic cars during Aircooled Scheveningen.
Project in numbers
- Working on the busiest part of Scheveningen was a challenge. The seaside resort remained open throughout the construction.
- The contractor worked on the project for a total of 571 days.
- The hottest working day was July 2, 2025, with temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celsius.
- The coldest day was January 18, 2024, when temperatures dropped to -7 degrees Celsius.
- On the busiest day in 2025, more than 180,000 visitors came to Scheveningen.
- The boulevard now features, among other things, 15,000 cubic meters of additional sand, 550 meters of sheet piling (a wall to hold back water and/or sand), 759 meters of staircase steps, 12 kilometers of cables and pipelines, and 17,500 square meters of new streets.
