Cycling season kicks off with tour around Burgum
This morning, around 78 seniors set off on their bikes from Bourguignon Bikes and Scooters in Burgum. Alderman for Sports Doeke Fokkema gave the starting signal for a scenic 30-kilometre tour through Tytsjerksteradiel. This ride marks the beginning of the new Cycling season: a programme that encourages seniors to continue cycling safely and confidently up to the age of 100.
Fokkema explains: "Through the activities of Cycling, seniors can stay mobile for longer and continue cycling with confidence. That gives them freedom, enjoyment and connection with others."
Interesting stops along the way
Along the route, there were several stops offering interesting insights. With the solar-powered ferry Schalkediep, the cyclists crossed from Suwâld to Garyp. At Brasserie Om de Dobben, participants were treated to a cup of coffee or tea, during which Aleida Muis of the Cyclists' Union spoke about safe cycling and aids that can help. Finally, the route passed by the Observeum, where volunteers gave a tour of the observatory. After the ride, attendees received a booklet containing all the cycling routes in Friesland.
