Veere has time back again
Residents of the old city centre may have noticed it already, as the carillon in the town hall tower of Veere is once again playing its melodies on the hour and half-hour.
For two months, the historic musical box, nearly 300 years old, and thus the carillon, had been silent. With the installation of a new group cabinet in the town hall, the electrician rewired the system. This caused the winding motors of the clock’s weights, the two striking mechanisms, and the musical box to rotate in the opposite direction, with unfortunate consequences. The large weight made it an enormous challenge to correct the issue. The musical box alone weighs 1,000 kilograms, lifted by a thick chain via an electric motor. Repairs also included replacing burnt-out electric motors.
The final repair work was carried out last Monday by a technician from the firm Eijsbouts. Unfortunately, the half-hour chime is not yet functioning, but the musical box, the clock mechanism, and the full-hour strike can be heard.
The carillonneur was still able to perform his Thursday recitals. The melodies on the musical box were changed in February, but two new ones will be installed sometime in April.
