Broekpolder presents future plans to governing coalition parties
Another celebration for the Coöperatie Broekpolder 2040 today. Two weeks ago, they won the horticultural entrepreneurship award for Collaboration, and today they presented their bidbook (a kind of future plan). In The Hague, Rob van Ruiten handed over the document on behalf of the cooperative to three members of the House of Representatives from the governing coalition parties: Marieke Vellinga (D66), Renate den Hollander (VVD), and Henk Jumelet (CDA). Alderman Peter Valstar was present on behalf of the municipality of Westland.
The bidbook describes how the Broekpolder – an area of 600 hectares between Honselersdijk, Naaldwijk, and the Veilingroute with around 100 greenhouse horticulture businesses and more than 300 households – sees itself in the future. How can the Broekpolder remain an attractive area to live and do business in by 2040? That is the question answered in the bidbook.
Residents and entrepreneurs at the helm
The Coöperatie Broekpolder 2040 was established in 2020 by residents and entrepreneurs who wanted to contribute to shaping their living environment. Together with the municipality, province, and water authority, they are working on an approach. This "bottom-up" way of collaborating should serve as an example for other areas in the Netherlands.
Call to central government
With the bidbook, the cooperative and its partners are calling on the central government to officially join the project. According to Alderman Peter Valstar, the document provides a strong foundation: “If the central government participates, we can jointly build a Broekpolder that is ready for the future.”
